- Mahina, malama.According to Johnson and Mahelona (40), the months are male stars in the sixth generation after male Ao (day) and female Pō (night).Each star-month has one or more star-wives. The males are born in succeeding generations starting with 'Ikuwā (Pohā-kō'ele'ele), followed by Welehu, Makali'i ('Auhuhu-pa'ina), Kā'elo, Kaulua, Nana, Welo, Ikiiki, Ka'aona, Hinaia'ele'ele, Māhoe Mua (Hilina Ehu), and Māhoe Hope (Hilina Mā). Malo 30 equates 'Ikuwā with October, but as shown in Emerson's note (Malo 33–5), correspondences with the Western calendar differed according to islands and individuals.
